Screening process

I’ve been a breeder for fourteen (14) years.  I have an excellent reputation both in the quality of my pups and my kennel.  My pups are healthy and well adjusted; my kennel is clean and spacious.  My premises are inspected.

I care about the welfare of my pups long after they leave my care.  I have provisions within my contract that state if for any reason you cannot keep one of my dogs, I will take them back.

Requirements

  • No pups will leave my kennels for their new homes before they are eight (8) weeks old; or until I feel they are ready to leave for their new homes.
  • All pups will have Vet checks prior to leaving my kennels. NO EXCEPTIONS made for anyone.
  • I reserve the right to refuse to sell to anyone my pups
  • I reserve the right to call and check on my placed pups.  I do welcome pictures and stories about how they are doing. I have many owners sending me pictures years after placement.  I love knowing my dogs are happy and well.

Recommendations:

Internet buying of pups makes it difficult to match my dogs to the personalities of the buyer—which is ideal—therefore:

  • I strongly recommend that new owners take their pups to a trainer for training.  This is a good for several reasons:

    • The pup benefits by association with other pups and people in a disciplined setting.
    • The new owner learns to handle such a large dog in a loving but firm way.
    • You receive your pup as a cute small pup.  Dane pups grow rapidly and by four months old are already bigger than most adult dogs of other breeds.

If they are inside dogs their size can cause unforeseen problems for those unfamiliar with these gentle giants. They will look full-grown but are still babies in their actions.  They need a disciplined structure in which to thrive.  You as owner need to provide that structure so you can set healthy boundaries as to what is acceptable for them to do and what is not. By providing this training, it will diminish frustration for both you and your pup. It will also prevent abusive situations from developing due to frustration.

These requirements and recommendations may seem unusual to some.  Let me explain why the welfare of my dogs is important to me.

Healthy Great Dane pups are no accident.  It takes a great of time, knowledge of the breed—plus’ and minus’.  Long before these pups are even conceived, careful consideration is given to my breeding pairs.  Are they ready for breeding?  Are they healthy?  Do they have a good temperament to pass on to the next generation?  Good conformation?  Spacious houses and yards for exercise must provided. The adult Dane’s are given regular medical check ups, Vet visits, Vaccinations, and worming.  They are provided with high quality food suited to their size and to make them as healthy as possible before breeding.  All this takes a great deal of time, money and love.

Danes are not bred until they are at least 18 months old. Good quality whelping houses must be available.  Mine are well insulated, have electricity and running water.  There’s heat provided for the winter months, A/C for the hot summer months. Once they are bred, the next 62 days I spend time daily with my females carefully watching over them, keeping them healthy, exercised, provide special food for the growth of the developing pups and for the health and milk production of the mother.  When the Dam goes into labor, I’m present.  Labor and birth can take all day.  Many give birth through the wee hours of the night.  I’m there to greet each pup.  I love these pups from their first breath in this new world.  If the dam has any difficulties, I’m there to handle it.  If she has a large litter, I provide supplemental feed of the pups several times a day.  I generally have several litters born near the same time so you can imagine the time involved with the care of these pups. I handle the pups and socialize with the pups several times a day.  Change bedding frequently to keep them dry, clean and healthy.  I provide vaccinations, worming, and whatever additional medical care needed to make them healthy.  I take care that they come into contact with other animals and children so they know how behave.  This is all a labor of love.  But make no mistake, it is labor—a lot of hard work went into the healthy pup you take home.

So, as you can see, my pups are loved and carefully cared for in all stages.  This is why it is so important to me that they have good and loving homes to go to with good people to continue loving them and keeping them healthy.  My pups have known nothing but love from the humans in their lives and expect humans to be the givers of love and attention.  I do my best to provide the best buyer education in caring for this breed.  This is why I want to know they are adjusting well in your home and are safe.  This is why I request that if you have any problems or questions to contact me.  I know my dogs.

This also why I become angry if I find out they’ve been abused or mishandled in any way.  If I find that to be the case, this is also why I will report any person mistreating these magnificent dogs. If there are legitimate problems with my pups, I want to know why and what happened.  I have no problems having a pup examined by a certified behavioral trainer to find out.
